We see it everyday in the office. A woman walks in and sets her purse on the hooks next to the treatment area. The hook appears to bend... How heavy is that purse or backpack you are carrying around?
In the video below, listen as Dr. Timothy Steflik from Coastal Integrative Healthcare in Palm Coast and Edgewater explains how the weight of a backpack or purse can cause neck and back pain. Don't let something so simple be the reason you have neck pain or back pain.
Many members of our community of New Smyrna Beach come to our office looking for relief from problems that stem from poor posture. The poor posture can be because they continually use a purse or backpack on one shoulder.
For fun, we had our office staff weigh their purses? How much do you think they weighed?
Office average was about 6 pounds! Imagine carrying that around all day. Not easy. In the video, Dr. Steflik recommends less than 10 pounds, but in reality it should be less than that. It should be based on the weight of the person carrying the bag. The lighter the person, the lighter the bag. Think of students returning to school in a few weeks. They should not all be carrying the same size and weight bag.
As a reminder, we only have a few days left to donate to our back to School Drive in Edgewater! Come help us help out the community this year! Drop off your school supplies in the office for a chance to win a FitBit. We will be raffling it off by Friday!
