Hello! We are pleased to announce Coastal Integrative Healthcare is partnering with the City of Edgewater in a big Back to School Drive! The school supply drive has already started in our office and other locations. The school supply drive will culminate with a fantastic event on Saturday August 6th at the YMCA in Edgewater from 10 am till 2 pm. 

The event on August 6th at the YMCA will be awesome! They swimming pool will be open for free to the public, and there will be the giveaway of the school supplies. PLUS, we will be there doing free posture screens, scoliosis screens and backpack fitting for the children, and free massages for the adults!

The goal of the drive is to collect as many school supplies including back packs to help children in our community get things started on the right foot! The goal set by the city is to collect 500 backpacks for the drive which is double the amount of last year!

The sole funding of this event comes from churches, civic groups, clubs and businesses. So, please come help us out. To give a little extra incentive, we are raffling off a grand prize! Do you want to win a snazzy purple BEACH cruiser! Did I mention it comes with saddle bags? If you don't want purple we decided to add a men's beach cruiser to the grand prize as well!

Team Coastal wants to help as many people in our community as possible so please spread the word to all your family, friends, neighbors, and enemies (hopefully that's a short list of enemies)!

What sends 7,000 people a year to the emergency room? Let's be honest, not one of you guessed back pack related injuries, but that's the truth according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is alarming for several reasons. First, it's a back pack, not a trampoline and yet it is sending people to the emergency room. Second, most of these injuries are HIGHLY preventable with the following tips. 

Why are children having so many problems with back packs?  A recent study conducted in Italy found that the average child carries a backpack that would be the equivalent of a 39-pound burden for the average adult man, or a 29-pound load for the average adult woman. Of those children in the study who carried heavy backpacks to school, 60 percent had experienced back pain as a result.

Because of the large amount of weights children carry in their bags the American Chiropractic Association recommends limiting the backpack’s weight to no more than 10 percent of the child’s body weight and urging the use of ergonomically correct backpacks.

Dr. Tim Steflik from Coastal Integrative Healthcare also recommends that the back pack not hang more than four inches below the waist. The further down the back pain hangs, the further forward a child has to lean their shoulders resulting in poor posture. 

Bigger is not better. The bigger a back pack, the more space kids have to cram extra heavy junk that will only weigh them down. 

Dr. Steflik suggests having your children use both shoulder straps. Using one strap will cause uneven weight distribution and may lead to back spasms and pain. The shoulder straps should also be padded so they don't dig into the shoulders.
